Wednesday night before we go to sleep,
after mulling over conflicting forecasts, I decide we should leave in
the morning and run back up the Hudson. Friday will be too late due
to the increasing winds.
We could stay and strip off canvas and
move onto a more secure mooring. We just took it off and put on our
sails to go through the locks and I am not thrilled to do it again in
high winds, so we take off.
Didn't seem like a smart decision after Joaquin headed east. The wind forecast had been
northeast so I thought after we get to lower NYC the waves would not
be so bad. Wrong! Wind stayed out of the north and higher than
predicted. We had water running down both decks at times all the way
to Haverstraw Bay. We stayed dry behind our dodger and clear vinyl
Bimini connector. Water was spraying over the full length of the
boat, we would of been soaked without it. I am kicking myself for
waiting until we got to Vero Beach two years ago to make it.
Fortunately, I was able to time the flood current and made good
speeds up the Hudson, until the last hour.
Our protected little cove. We were on the opposite shore a few days ago.
We are now in this little basin off the
Hudson with 360 degree protection.
