After lunch and finishing our morning chores, we head north a couple miles on another dinghy trip to Cistern Cay to the ruins to two houses build by Columbian drug lords that were using Cistern Cay as a base for running drugs to the US in the 1980.
Heading out the cut |
They had a paved runway. We previously snorkeled on one of their DC-3’s that crashed in the water just south of Cistern Cay in the 1980’s. As we leave the harbor with Mark and Karen, Phil joins us in his dinghy for this trip. The women thought this exploration was rather boring, but the guys enjoyed it. We found the ruins of what had been two very nice homes in the 1980’s.
A couple hurricanes later |
I assume aside from Hurricane damage to locals stripped anything a value after the Columbians were finially jailed in the US. I was quite surprised to find a extensive network of paved roads leading to other buildings and the air strip on the other side of the island. I hiked along one of the roads for about a mile before it became too overgrown to pass without bushwacking. I never did get to the airstrip, which authorities eventually dug holes in so planes could no longer land.
We get back, showered and then play Mexican Train in the Pavilion while we wait for Chill & Grill night. I visit with a number of cruisers that are also heading south.
