Miami, Marine Stadium

We have another short day south to Marine Stadium, across from Miami. We wait until 11AM to leave to go under the only 55 foot bridge on the ICW (all others are 65 feet), near low tide. After we pass through the MacArthur Causeway Bascule Bridge at the Port of Miami we find the next railroad bridge, which is normally opened in the down position. There are about 8 boats, sail and a couple large yachts waiting to figure out what is going on. Finally after 20 minutes or so a long slow train of shipping containers passes over the bridge to be loaded onto container ships at the Port of Miami. Finally after 45 minutes the bridge opens and all the boats pass south.

Miami from Marine Stadium

We anchor in Marine Stadium a large shallow basin that hosted speed boat races starting back in the 1960’s. The stadium grandstand which seats 6,000 people was declared unsafe after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. It is in the process of being restored and now hosts the Miami Boat Show.
