Mile Hammock

We had originally intended to go to Wrightsville Beach and then the next day head offshore to Cape Lookout. The weather for the next few days is not good for any offshore stuff and I decide being the weekend Wrightsville beach will be a zoo, warm sunny day, lots of small boats zipping around, so I decide to push on to Mile Hammock. Chance of thunderstorms overnight and tomorrow, much rather be in Mile Hammock for that. Linda is not happy, her favorite Mexican Restaurant, “Tower 7 Baja” is at Wrightsville Beach.

I hate this part of the ICW because there are three swing bridges that open at times that make it in possible to transient at normal cruising speeds between them and make the opening times. We usually wind up wasting a least an hour here. If the wind and current are in your favor it can work out well, but today the current is against us. We do get a nice bonus, the third bridge north, the Surf City Swing Bridge had been removed at the end of March and the new 65 foot bridge opened in December after we passed that way going south. I guess that is why I don’t hear any calls on channel 13 requesting bridge openings. A long day, we get to Mile Hammack around 6 oclock and there is only one boat there, two more come in around dark. Mile Hammock is part of the Marines Camp Lejeune and they allow cruisers to anchor there, it is a popular waypoint. There we 20 boats here during our stop in the Fall.
