Near Talkeetna

Cold night at this elevation was in the high 40’s in the morning. Double banket night and I havd to turn up the heat in the morning.

Today is laundry day and showers too.  But first we go to the Sled Dog Kennel.  The park service maintains 30 or 40 sled dogs for winter travel through the park's backcountry.  No motorized vehicles are allowed by law there. They serve scientific studies.  We get to interact with the dogs and get a demonstration of a few of them pulling a wheeled sled.

After that, we head to the main campground to do laundry, shower and organize RV storage. Linda does the laundry and I reorganize storage,  In our rush to leave Vermont, I haphazardly stowed stuff away. I had a storage area that I created under the rear passenger bench seat that was empty when we left. Also I have a number of storage totes that were not full. Linda’s sister is joining us in Anchorage and I need to better organize storage and free up space.

After our chores are done with, we head back to the Cafe for a very late lunch, unfortunately they are out of Salmon Stew so I have to settle for Tomato Bisque. Then one more stop to empty tanks and take on more water and get Linda an Ice Cream cone, which I help her with. We finally get on the road around 5:00PM to drive halfway to Anchorage. Linda’s sister, Sabrina flies in tomorrow at 8:00PM

We listen to “Audio Tour of Alaska” which is pretty good. It tracks your GPS on your phone and serves up stories and information of what is along your route. It has musical interludes between stories and is actually quite good at calling out information on what is just ahead.  A Lot more relaxing than listening to the news. Surprisingly we have fairly good cell reception for the next 3 hours.

View of Denali from roadside viewing area, we are probably never going to see

One interesting road side “Attraction” is the “Igloo” a defunct gas station that had a short life. Multiple owners have not been able to reopen it.  It had the distinction of fueling military helicopters flying between Anchorage and Fairbanks, as there were no other airfields to service them.

The Igloo, rainbow in background

We stop around 8:00 pm at a roadside gravel stop for the night. There is one other travel trailer and pickup here for the night. It's a little noisy close to the road with occasional trucks going by.

  1. I've been inside the igloo. It's an interesting history, that's for sure!

  2. So sorry you didn’t see Denali. We were very lucky and saw it many times. We did a lot of hiking and saw it first from a hike we took from the campground we were in. We did do the bus ride to the end and saw it most of that day. Love reading your posts! Jody McGraw

  3. It is said that 2/3 of Denali visitors never see the mountain. I am fortunate to have seen it several times on two trips. If you have time to get back there, it is absolutely stunning! David
