Rained a little overnight. Another cool night so I had the Van heater running. The heater brand is called, “Truma”. It blows warm air and heats the water, via propane and/or electric, works very well.
We wake to another cool cloudy day. Our only goal today is to cross back into the States to the “UP”, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We immediately pass a number of horse and buggies, Mennonites either going or coming from church. A couple fellows were riding bikes, wearing black brimmed hats.
Lots of Lupins along the road sides.
The last city before we cross back to the States is Sault Ste. Marie. Across the St. Marys River separating the two countries, is also the city of Sault Ste. Marie, the smaller of the two cities. Crossing over the international bridge we pass over the Soo Locks connecting shipping between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes and then rapids below dams that control the amount of water passing from Lake Superior.

Still don’t know where we are going to be staying tonight. After US Customs, we breeze through this time, we stop at the Michigan visitors center. I do some research on the Boondockers App for a place to stay. Boondockers is an organization of fellow RVers that have sites on their property to host members. The members that host, get free membership. I find an interesting place right on Lake Michigan.
We are impressed how remote and unpopulated much of the UP is. Lots of long straight forested roads, few homes for the first 80 miles or so. When we get about an hour away from our destination I check to see if we have received a confirmation and discover I forgot to hit send. When I do I quickly get an affirmative response.
Very cool evening on the beach, our hosts Mike & Denise’s home in the background |
